Sustainable Packaging Solutions

Here at Shepherd Thermoforming, sustainable packaging is always top of mind. After all, we were the pioneers of using recycled plastics in our plant. As a result, we have been able to help reduce not only our carbon footprint, but that of our clients as well.

Plastics Made From Blue-Bin Materials

Do you know where your used plastic water bottles go? In most cases, they can be recycled into plastic sheets which companies can use in their manufacturing process.

As early adopters of recycled PET ((polyethylene terephthalate), we have years of experience in working with this material. When used for plastic packaging, the difference between recycled and virgin-grade is unnoticeable to the naked eye. In addition to being an environmentally friendly packaging option, in most cases, RPET is a cost-effective one as well.

Shepherd’s Recycling Practices

Did you know that Torontonians use about 100 million plastic water bottles a year?
In 2016, Shepherd Thermoforming processed close to 4,000,000 lb of RPET which is equivalent to roughly  43,000,000 recycled water bottles!

According to David Suzuki, 85% of water bottles are tossed in the trash. That leaves Toronto with roughly 15,000,000 recycled bottles. Essentially, Shepherd Thermoforming used triple the amount of RPET as the city of Toronto recycled last year.

The New Age of Biodegradable Plastics

Plastics are traditionally made from products that are normally not biodegradable.

However, due to the demand for sustainable plastic solutions, steps have been taken to help develop green plastics. As a result, manufacturers have adapted to the use of plastics such as polylactic acid (PLA) to keep up with the demand.

PLA is an environmentally friendly plastic that has stronger biodegradable components than traditional plastics. It’s made from natural materials such as corn starch and sugar cane. In the long run, PLA can be viewed as an environmentally friendly option for companies looking for sustainable plastic solutions.
