We all know that this is the Maytag repairman who doesn’t get any work because the Maytag washers don’t need service. Well, that’s how we feel at Shepherd Thermoforming because our customers are seeing how we can produce trays that last. Here is what our sales rep in New York State, Chris Spiegel, says when asked by a customer to reduce cost of the current shipping tray.
“The trays, used for a medical product, had a short life with cracking and sharp corners. This created a safety issue with operators at the medical manufacturer and with their customer. Shepherd offered a more durable tray with improved design and material eliminating the issues with sharp edges. This allowed them to show significant savings to their customer. The numbers tell the story! In 2011, 38,100 trays were used for this program. The Shepherd tray was less expensive and of a higher quality. The higher quality allowed the trays to be reused many more cycles than the previous version. In the last 15 months, only 17,000 trays have been purchased. This is 50% less waste and more than 50% less cost compared to 2011. Between the cost savings and the reduced quantity required, the medical manufacturer has saved over $100,000.
This is the Maytag repairman problem, but the medical manufacturing operation reassures me there will be more opportunity going forward as they consolidate packaging at different facilities.”

We have been asked to present “Contour Print” our latest technology at GPEC. The conferences is being held March 20-22, 2013 at the Sheraton New Orleans hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana. SPE’s GPEC division puts on the conference catering to Brand owners, converters, recyclers and reclaimers. Topics range from types of packaging, recycling/collecting, sorting equipment & techniques to government & collection issues. It is official Contour Print is now available to current customers. Shepherd has invested over a year in training staff and vendor partners in Contour Print requirement. The City of Toronto is pushing hard to get all thermoformed plastic packaging into the blue recycling bin. Until September of this year only bottles were being accepted. Shepherd Thermoforming is a major user of recycled PET for production of new clamshell and tray packaging and has been a proponent of the expansion of the municipal recycling programs to include other products. New developments spearheaded by the Canadian grocery retail industry, along with advancements in recycling and sorting technology, have removed the obstacles to recycling these plastic materials such as ‘clamshell’ containers, clear fruit and vegetables containers, etc. Other municipalities should soon follow suit. The Toronto website “wewantit.ca” lists the following items to be included in blue bin recycling.
– Clamshell containers (hinged, clear plastic containers used for food items such as berries and take-out)
– Clear fruit and vegetable containers
– Clear take-out food containers
– Moulded bakery item trays
– Plastic plates and glasses
– Egg cartons
– Cold beverage cups/lids
– Compact disk cases (empty)
