Barry Shepherd

Why not? Often the reply of Barry Shepherd, the founder of Shepherd Thermoforming & Packaging, when asked – could this be done in thermoforming?

“Barry has demonstrated great dedication to the thermoforming industry over the years,” said Mark Strachan, SPE Thermoforming Division chairman, in a statement, “As a forward thinker and a visionary, Barry has a desire to further the industry and has generously and willingly shared his vast knowledge and experience with us.” – excerpt from Plastics News article.

Forward thinking meant nothing without acting and implementing. In the mid 90’s, ShepherdFloat overlay
won business with a large healthcare company to produce thermoformed blisters. These small blisters were automatically machine fed and sealed to a blister card so cut registration was critical. Many previous thermoforming companies had walked away from this business or over priced in order to control the flange dimensions. Barry set out to develop a method to locate the steel rule die over each cavity (commonly referred as a floating steel rule die) so that the flange was consistent on each part across the index thus, cut registration was precise.
Another instance of forward thinking was gravity activated undercuts. Thermoforming a part required draft angles around the part in orderGravity activated undercuts to lift the formed rigid plastic off of the mould. For a stack feature that does not require the traditional 180° stack. The undercuts that create the stack features are typically difficult to release from a mould during in-line thermoforming. This innovation allows the undercut on the mould to hinge away from the part as it releases from the mould. Once cleared of the part the strategic weighting and hinge point allow the undercut to fall back into place using only gravity.

Some of these methods were patentable but Barry’s unselfish philosophy was to share it with his friends at SPE and the thermoforming world to further the industry as a whole. As Barry would say, why not?

Hand washing stations ✓, seal and secure exterior premises ✓, HACCP plan ✓…

January is SQF implementation month at Shepherd. We are finishing up the major capital expenditures required to meet the standard. Machines are getting moved,  floors getting re-coated/sealed, ceiling cleaned, installation of interior separating walls – are just a few of the projects happening this month. Rest assured we have done our best to work these projects into our production schedule so that interruptions and delays can be minimized.

Why SQF?

SQF integrates a quality component into the standard as well as food safety.  SQF is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and Administered by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).

The SQF Code has a category specifically scoped for Manufacturers of Food Sector Packaging Materials, which is where Shepherd fits in.

Shepherd Thermoforming & Packaging will be the only dedicated custom thermoformer in Canada with SQF certification.

If you have any food contact thermoformed packaging requirements contact Todd Shepherd –

Food Packaging Fast to Market

Posted by | Filed under Announcements, Community | Oct 22, 2014 | Tags: , , | Comments Off on Food Packaging Fast to Market

Food Packaging (1 of 1)Low cost tooling for thermoformed packaging that gets your new food product on the shelves fast.

You have a great new food product that requires unique packaging to sell it to its full potential.

Your budget for start up is limited but you cannot sacrifice the impact that a high quality package design will have on the sales results of your product.

Faced with an introduction date issued by your customer, you must have a steady flow of packaging within a few weeks in order to meet sales forecasts.

SQFShepherd Thermoforming will take your project through the design, sample, tooling and production stages faster and cheaper than those big thermoformers. Not only that, you will deal only with Shepherd for all stages of development. Shepherd can provide you with the security of SQF(Safe Quality Food) certification (full certification expected by Spring of 2015) that you and your customers need to be assured of safe quality food packaging.

How can we do this:
Over 30 years Shepherd has matured to become one of the most respected thermoformers of thin (and heavy) gauge packaging using tooling that is designed and built in-house on in-line machines that do not require expensive tooling. Now we are growing into the food packaging market by investing heavily in SQF certification and production improvements.

The largest thermoforming companies are interested in selling millions of pounds of plastic. If you can wait months and pay over one hundred thousand dollars for tooling then we would suggest you contact them. However, should you also call Shepherd, you may be surprised at what we can do.

Students of the Packaging Industry learn from Shepherd

Posted by | Filed under Announcements, Community, Design | May 23, 2014 | Tags: , , | Comments Off on Students of the Packaging Industry learn from Shepherd

For 8 years Shepherd Thermoforming and Packaging has hosted Humber College students with a seminar and a tour of the Shepherd facility. Humber’s Package Design course includes a segment on Thermoforming and its instructor Bert Bobrovniczky has arranged this event each year which generally is attended by over 20 students.

The students have the use of a small table top vacuum former donated to the school by Shepherd, allowing them to design parts, build tooling and produce samples.  Students were told to think of a new food product and design the package complete with thermoformed package and graphics that would be functional and have merchandising appeal.

Each year we have noticed that the quality of parts improves and this year samples were submitted to Sales Engineer Simon Mangos for his comments. Here are 8 of the projects presented at the Shepherd seminar.  Simon and Shepherd management congratulate Mr.  Bobrovniczky and his students on their excellent work.
