Improving North American economy and Shepherd’s move into the food market with SQF certification have prompted the company to purchase a new thermoforming line from the Italian machine manufacturer OMG. The high efficiency line will add the much needed production capacity made necessary by the increase in food packaging business that the company is currently experiencing.
The machine is expected to ship to Canada and be running food trays by late this summer. It will also open up machine time on other lines which will improve delivery to our repeat customers.
Shepherd Thermoforming can attribute a big part of its success to the many long term employees who form the team that keeps everything running smoothly. The company was founded 30 years ago by the Shepherd family who continue to be involved in the business. Three people have 20 years of service, several are within 3 years of that milestone and a number employees have at least 10 years with the company.

At Shepherd we are once again stretching the limits of the thermoforming process by adding coated paper to the list of materials we are capable of converting into packaging products.
Fibreform® is a paper product produced by BillerudKorsnäs of Sweden with a heat seal coating that can be heated and thermoformed on conventional in-line thermoforming machines. Preprinting and heat sealing to thermoformed trays provides an extremely attractive and functional package.
The 100% virgin material is ideal for the most stringent food packaging requirements. Draw ratios are limited but applications include lidding for food and confection trays. Contact Shepherd to have a sales representative show you a sample of preprinted, powerformed Fibreform by Shepherd.

For 9 years Shepherd Thermoforming and Packaging has hosted Humber College students with a seminar and a tour of the Shepherd facility. Humber’s Package Design course includes a segment on Thermoforming and each year its instructor Bert Bobrovniczky has arranged this event at Shepherd which was attended by 15 students this year.
The students have the use of a small table top vacuum former donated to the school by Shepherd, allowing them to produce thermoformed samples. The students have to design a package and hand build a wood mould which they use to form parts on the machine. They then finish the package with graphic inserts and printed boxes. With what they have to work with they form some excellent parts and show surprising creativity.
The students get first hand exposure to the complete process of design, tool making and production while visiting Shepherd. They also learn about sustainability and environmental issues pertaining to his or her part. Hats off to Mr. Bobrovincsky for arranging the visit every year and good luck to the students in their careers!
The Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification is almost complete. It has been a long process but audits are scheduled for June which will result in Shepherd being one of a small number of Canadian packaging manufacturers recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
Existing production lines have been relocated to make room for the new high speed machine. Floors have been epoxied and new walls are in place.
Shepherd will be the only custom thermoformer in Canada with SQF which provides customers with the security of knowing their plastic packaging follows the highest standards for use in direct contact with food.
