Two years ago we started the journey of getting direct food contact certification by enrolling all of our employees in a 2 month training program. Followed by over $150,000 in capital investments for the exterior and interior of the building.
The efforts of all the staff were well worth it. With completion of the final audit last week by NSF International, Shepherd scored 95%. This SQF (Safe Quality Food Certification) not only allows us to produce products for the food industry, it vaults us to the top of an elite list of thermoformers that have the SQFII certification. SQF is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and Administered by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).

ATLANTA — Barry Shepherd, who with his wife Denise, founded Shepherd Thermoforming and Packaging Inc. in Toronto 30 years ago, thinks he knows why he is the Thermoformer of the Year: Because his family’s story represents what countless other thermoformers have done since the early days.
“It’s been quite a journey, but it’s been a journey that so many of us here in the plastics industry have traveled,” Shepherd said in an acceptance speech during a Sept. 1 awards dinner at the Society of Plastics Engineers Thermoforming Conference in Atlanta.
